K (Kr) Value in Rupture Disc - Definition
Apart from the characteristic of piping systems itself, devices or equipment installed on a pipeline contributes to the pressure loss in the system. "K" , a pressure loss coeficient is dependent on the device structure and Reynolds number.
Rupture disc as a relieving device , according to ASME Code is recognised as a flow resistive component of a relief system. In short, Kr, resistance to flow is used for sizing of pressure relief system such as rupture disc. The rupture disc holders and burst characteristic effect the Kr value. Rupture disc manufacturers measures Kr values through laboratory testing of their products and commonly certified to ASME Section VIII Division 1. Each manufacturers would have a standard table of their rupture disc stating models, size, media and their respective Kr value.
